You use a whetstone to remove small burrs from wood chisels or other sharp tools, after sharpening on a grinder.

The use of the whetstone is done as follows: The chisel is properly pressed against the whetstone with the sharpened surface and the burrs are removed by making light rotating movements. To keep the whetstone flat, the entire surface of the stone must always be used. Water is usually used as a lubricant.
